Beetle Bonanza

Beetles are the insect species with the most diversity to their name: the one pictured above is only one (though I don’t know which, as it’s currently unidentified) of the 25,000 different scientific names that grace the order Coleoptera. Named for their two pairs of wings from the Greek word ‘koleos’, or sheathed, they’re often grouped into the ‘disgusting and icky’ category of bugs. But they can also be some of the most beautiful, with colors ranging from iridiscent green to black that shines in all the colors of the rainbows. This one that I spotted near a river in Kullu is one of the more understated of its relatives, but nevertheless is beautiful.
